Ingredients
- 3/4 cups water Room temperature to 90° to 100°
- 1/2 cup whole milk Room temperature 90° to 100°
- 1 tablespoon Instant Yeast
- 1/8 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup Olive Oil
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Save for later add 1 small egg for the egg wash to top the hot dogs in the oven
- Save 3-4 tablespoons of salted butter to top cooked hot dogs
Instructions
- We work on the wet mixture first. Add the warmed water and yeast, and mix with a fork or spoon, and add the sugar.
- Then add the milk and the olive oil and stir. Then set aside.
- Then get the flour in a new mixing bowl, then add the salt, and garlic, and slowly add in the cheddar cheese with a fork to avoid it clumping.
- Then add the wet mixture slowly to the flour mixture with a fork.
- Then you will knead the dough for 8 minutes.
- Place the dough in a nice cleaned bowl (DO NOT GREASE WITH OIL)
- After the knead you will let it rise for 1 hour in a warm area.
- Punch out the gas in the dough and get onto a clean work surface.
- This will make 12 or a dozen hot dog buns. We will cut it into 12 even pieces. Eyeball them out.
- Pinch together and roll into a ball set to the side you will do this for all 12 pieces.
- Rest for 10 minutes in a warm place.
- Once all are done roll out each piece with a roller into a hot dog size shape (a nice rectangle) about 5 inches apart.
- Then roll the dough into itself with pinching and folding. Keep the seam nice and tight, roll out more if needed to keep the 5 inches. (if it’s a little bit bigger that’s fine) Repeat this set for all 12 balls.
- Space each hot dog about 1 1/2 inches apart. Now this will rise again for 1 hour.
- After the dough has risen again you will add an oven-safe dish to the bottom of your oven and will it with 1 cup of water when the hot dog buns go in the oven.
- Then after it’s risen you will wash each hot dog with an egg wash.
- Preheat oven to 375° Bake for 20 to 25 minutes to cook. Check at 20 to see how they are.
- Top with melted butter on top after you bring them out of the oven.
- Allow to cool down for 10 to 15 minutes on a cooling rack.

Notes
So adding the cheese is great but it needs to cook longer closer to 20 to 25 minutes to get a good crust on the buns.
