This recipe has been adapted from a sloppy joes recipe found on Natasha’s Kitchen. After following the recipe I ended up changing quite a few things. What I was left with is without a doubt the best sloppy joes I have ever had! Great economical evening meal and easy to make!
In a large bowl, mix together the Worcestershire, yellow mustard, sugar, marinara sauce, and ketchup until smooth. Set aside.
Using a large Dutch oven over medium high heat, add half the oil and cook the hamburger meat. Season with salt, pepper, to taste. Cook until no longer pink remove and drain the burger grease.
Add the other half of the oil to the Dutch oven. Sauté the peppers and onions for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds or until fragrant.
Add the burger meat back to the Dutch oven. Add the sauce and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium low heat. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes or until thickened to your liking.
Notes
The ground beef I used in this recipe was home made ground beef. The taste is so much better than store bought. Even though hand made ground beef is better, my suggestion is to use 80% 20% ground beef since it has a good amount of fat (fat=flavor).
Although the original recipe was a good start I felt like the changes I made took this recipe to a new level. My memory of sloppy joes was always more vinegary than sweet. This recipe is the mix we prefer, but you can adjust the sugar and/or mustard according to your taste.
