Notes

Here are some fun different names for Egg in a Basket but they are all the same dish.
This little egg-in-bread dish has a ton of names depending on where you’ve heard it from.
Some of the classic ones are egg in a hole, egg in a frame, bullseye, and hole in one.
You’ll also hear bird/nest type names like bird in a nest, bird’s nest, or birdie in a basket.
Then there are the one-eyed names like one-eyed jack, one-eyed pete, and one-eyed sailor.
Some people go more visual with it—hobo eggs, frog in a basket, or even Popeye.
And then there’s “toad in the hole,” which is mostly a US nickname for this, even though in the UK that actually means a totally different sausage-and-batter dish.
No matter what you call it, it’s all the same simple comfort food.
